Happy Homemaker 2017-10-02

The weather:
Fall weather finally!  13C with sun today and upcoming week is from 16C to 20C.

On my reading pile:
Doomsday book – Connie Willis.  Recommended by my friend PamelaG.

On my TV:
Ongoing with 6 feet Under.  Halfway through season 2.

On the menu for this week:
Chicken vol aux vents , steaks, smoked meat.

On my to-do list last weekend:
My to-do list for next weekend is not written out yet.  During the week I work during the day so don’t accomplish anything in the evenings! I get home and am beat so weekends are for the to-do lists.  Which is why I’ll post about the last weekend to-do list.

Outside windows (front) –still have to do the rest of the house but those are the worst ones – glad it’s done!
Deep-clean 2 entry closets –put out the mittens and hats in the Front closet.  Put away sandals.
Low-fodmap crockpot spaghetti sauce to make 2 lasagnas for the freezer
French onion soup for the freezer
One load of summer clothes taken down to the basement
Regular housechores

What I am sewing, crocheting, knitting or creating:
Working on my scarf – finally advancing a bit.  One of my friends on MHH sent me a link of how to do a ‘lifeline’ and it sure helped a lot with the unknitting!

Looking around the house:
My to-do list on the coffee table along with my knitting.
Looks nice outside with lawn mowed and all flowers and shrubs cut (except for the hedge which dh is hesitating with).
Halloween totes have been pulled out from the attic and are now sitting in the basement.

From the camera:

Don't always have new pics, so I'll pick some random pictures I have on the computer.  An old picture of March 2017.... it's a-coming!

Something fun to share:
Started a new class at noon two weeks ago - Stretching (we have some classes available where I work during lunch hour - $).  1st class was just ok, but 2nd one was quite good. Hoping it helps to pull the kinks out of this body! :)

What I'm wearing today:
For now I'm still in my pj's getting this post ready.  I'll just put on some jeans and a sweater.

2017 - 1st pair of knitted socks!

One of my goals for 2017 was to learn to knit socks.  I found a lady who taught me ... I went to her home a few afternoons this summer.  This pair was with old wool from my grandma's.  Not quite the same gray and they may be scratchy but I'm still happy.  Now I have to start a 2nd pair right away so I don't forget how to do them!  My daughter bought me wool for at leat 4 more pairs... so I'll be busy this winter :)  I'll be making Christmas gifts for next year!

Moose pillow 2017

I found some fabric for $1 (I think it was a dishcloth) with a moose on it and bought a $3 pillow-form at the dollar-store.  My son liked the fabric, so now he has a new cushion on his bed :)

Smell of Christmas game

Here is a poem about the smells of Christmas from Lillie Williams.  It is a lovely poem.

The smell of Christmas

Looking through the kitchen
Window starring at the sky
Singing soft melodies
As the hour passes by
Snuggle beside my oven with
A cup of coffee in my hand
Watching the snowflakes fall
Like a blanket covering the land

The smell of pine aroma
Lingers in every room
 And baking apple pies
 All after noon
The smell of Christmas
Somehow fills the air
Lights twinkling on the tree
And toys everywhere

Friends and love ones
Sat down for a talk
With the holiday season
Embedded in their thought
Children around the fire
Place eating cookies, and
Drinking milk
Dad relaxing in his chair
After a long tiresome trip

The holiday season is
Bringing good cheer
And the smell of Christmas
Lingers near
On a cold winter morning
Drinking hot tomato soup
And a jolly old man in
His little red suit

Ham, potatoes, to
The table they bring
A feast so good, its
Fit for a king
Prayers and love
That fills the air
And the smell of
Christmas is everywhere.

If you follow the link you will find a photo tutorial

Cherry Cheesecake Shooters
Prep Time:   3 Hours
Difficulty:    Easy
Cook Time: 15 Minutes
Servings:     18 Servings
·         2 bags (12 Ounce) Frozen Sweet Cherries
  • 1/4 cup Honey
  • 1/4 cup Whiskey (optional)
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • Juice Of Half A Lemon
  • 1 teaspoon Cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon Almond Extract
  • 2 packages 8 Ounce Cream Cheese
  • 1 can (14 Oz. Size) Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 12 whole Graham Crackers (the 4-section Rectangles)
  • 1/4 cup Sliced Almonds
Combine the cherries and honey in a medium saucepan and cook it over medium heat until hot and bubbly. Pour in the whiskey and stir to combine, then let it cook for 2 minutes. Stir in the butter until it melts.

Mix together the lemon juice with the cornstarch, then pour it in. Continue cooking for 2-3 minute until thicker. Add the almond extract.

Pour into a bowl and allow to cool to room temperature. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for a few hours, or until chilled.

Crush the graham crackers and spoon into the bottom of mini wine glasses.

Add cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk to bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and whip them together until fluffy.

Fill a pastry bag or zipper bag with the filing. Snip off the end and pipe a big helping over the crumbs in each of the glasses.

Top with a big spoonful of the cherry topping.Top with sliced almonds.

(Note: Mix 2 tablespoons melted butter into the crumbs if you’d like them to be a little more moist.)
(Note: 1 package of cream cheese makes for a more pudding-like texture; 2 packages makes for a thicker texture.)

Thanks Pionneer Woman!

Friday Night at the Movies!

A Hallmark movie – Christmas at Cartwright’s.  Starring Alicia Witt, Gabriel Hogan and Wallace Shawn.

A single mom gets a holiday job as a department store Santa to help boost her finances, and then an angel enters her life and brings about some positive changes, including the spark of a new romance.

It has all that is needed in a Christmas movie…. Santa, love, elf, a mean person, …  Of course, it’s obvious when she dresses as Santa that she is not a man, but nobody seems to notice.  I like Alicia Witt, I find her so pretty and Wallace Shawn as the elf is terrific.

Hope you enjoy the movie!
